Essay 3. What is unique or different about you that would be an asset to others in the MBA Program?
It was a sunny, late Friday afternoon; one natty and well-educated man was seating at the
corner, scratching his head and trying to overcome an unexpected bottleneck. He was my
classmate, nicknamed “booky spook”, and quiet place would be his haunt. The bottleneck
must have been a tough challenge for him that he racked his brains to find the answer.
Unquestionably, deductive reasoning is imperative for everyone to ponder a question; we
could gain more and more experiences while solving various problems. I believe logical
thinking is one of the best ways to inspire innovative ideas; hence math is always my
favorite subject in school. The process of solving a complex math question just like a
mellifluous movement attracts me a lot. However, not only thinking but discussing is one
of the essential factors in a group meeting. During four-year math teaching experience, I
found my passion for sharing my knowledge to others. In addition, I learned how to
simplify complicate math formula in different types of analyses by guiding students
through a higher order problem. Finally, booky spook and I solved his problem on
statistics by our disputing and brainstorming. I really enjoyed my achievement while
seeing the smiles of other team-workers. I could always get better understanding and
strengthen my knowledge as well.
My principles of scientific methods for solving problems have carried over into the
workspace. On the first day I entered the rating department of Evergreen International
Corporation, I found all my colleagues often work overtime. Some of my colleagues
missed lots of treasure time to accompany their children. One day, one of my colleagues
was sighting for her absent for her daughter’s piano concert and that made me want to
improve this situation. After involving the content of work, I discovered there were many
duplicate works which can be reduced by teamwork. By sharing my opinion to my
colleagues, I received many good feedbacks and reduced the extra working hours.
Fortunately, I was promoted to leader of seven members within a year because of my
contribution to work. I am always willing to listen to my colleagues if they need to talk;
delighted for new love, anxious for pregnant, even excited for their little boy’s learning to
walk is also covered. I believe the shared visions should not only exist among team work
but also companionship, because I am dealing with humankind. On a professional level, I
built up trust among team members and shared visions into daily tasks, and successfully
established a systematic organization in my department.
Besides, some extracurricular activities can also reflect my personalities. For example, I
love to travel all over the world due to my adventure spirit and, eagerness to learn local
cultures and to meet people with different attitude towards life. I will never forget the
encounter with a Japanese girl, Naomi, at Siem Reap International Airport in Cambodia.
Lonely, uneasy, and helplessly, she was standing in front of a payphone and being
perturbed by the cancellation of lodging reservation at the moment I saw her. Ever been
in the same situation before, I was then more sophisticated so that I helped her to find an
available room. After receiving some disappointing responses, I decided to share my
room with her. Longing for studying languages when I have spare time, I found my
Japanese help me to break the ice with her. During the following five days, more amazing
events and tough challenges came to us continuously, including a straying-home story
happened in Angkor Wat Temple. My adventure spirit also took me to join many exciting
activities while traveling to New Zealand. Memorizing each step on the prehistoric cave,
every breathtaking moment while rafting on the river, and many fantastic types of
scenery, I still can feel my excitement towards blackwater rafting and climbing the ice
river.
For the coming study in MBA program, I already prepared to actively involve in the class
and apply what I learn from the class to the real world. I believe my experience in
business management and of cultures traveling, along with my logic thinking and
systematic organizing, math and language ability, undaunted spirit in taking adventures
and sincere attitude in listening to others would definitely make me an asset in your MBA
Program.
